Sometimes, the wizard can be a great boost to keeping your older software around. At other times, the wizard confirms what you might have already suspected: You need to update your software to a more current version. Still, refer to the nearby sidebar, “Running older software.”

RUNNING OLDER SOFTWARE

Windows 10 has finally crossed the threshold of compatibility for ancient DOS programs and early Windows software. Whereas you could finagle Windows to run older software in previous versions, Windows 10 finally puts its foot down.

The best way to run older software is to emulate DOS or Windows on your PC. I recommend a program called DOSBox, which is available free at www.dosbox.com.

You can install and use the DOSBox emulator to attempt to run older software, but it’s not the easiest solution. In fact, my best advice is to obtain an updated version of the program you want to run.
